For me the bottom line is I really don't care what other people think of my art. I'm creating what's in my heart and gut. I'm creating what I HAVE TO create.

In fact, I heard it said by a rather "important" artist, that you really aren't pushing the envelop if alot of people like your work. Nobody likes new art at first.

"I really feel that I actually had this class of 30 student’s attention for at least 15 minutes… then, they lost interest!"

Typical of our internet-based, self-absorbed culture. Not your fault. Maybe next time, pump them on 1 topic for 15 minutes, then throw them a curve ball to get their attention back.

Can you exhibit there yourself or do you need gallery representation?

I wish we had something similar in Arizona. Kind of a wasteland here.

Here's a good source for contemporary galleries in Europe.

I'm going to start sending them mailings along with my USA gallery contacts.

A thought...We should find a single word, similar to DeviantArt or something. Some sort of buzz word. Maybe start our own word to describe our art....cubists, dadaist, impressionist....?

A different topic...you are very well art educated and intelligent. How would you describe my "popart/abstract expression" works? 3 words or less? I'm having trouble identifying that.

Thanks.

John,
LET'S DO IT!
I've been thinking globally for a long time in my other career of educational administration. Many of my art courses and educational upgrades were taken abroad (such as Italy and England and the USA).
I have a good artist friend in Portugal who could be a possible contact (Portugal is surprisingly advanced in contemporary art) and the other hot spot is Mexico - Oaxaca has incredible abstract galleries along with Mexico city). China? Why not?

Why don't you give me an outline of your vision for the global website - how many artists? How many pics per person, etc. I am just having my own website designed instead of using established ones.
Have you looked into shipping and insurance costs? What would you like me to do?

Don''t be too envious...I haven't yet sent my art to Italy. However, the one tidbit of info from that PDF paper for me is....think globally.

Several of the artists that were quoted expressed that. It's now a global art community.

I don't live in a small town, but I live in the southwest USA which has it's own distinct art style. Think cowboys, horses, desert, etc. So after reading that writing I am committed to thinking globally and am now going to display work in a Toronto gallery and I've renewed contact with the galleries in Italy, etc.

We should also think in terms of the internet. A thought....how about joining forces and create an international website (ie., gallery) where we can display our work?? I know there are a few out there already, but they have hundreds of artists. I'm talking about a select few artists that work in "innovative contemporary art"??

It would be relatively easy to set up and we could take payment via PayPal. I'm a web designer in another life...so that part is covered.

Thoughts??

Hi, Art Smart.

I'm reading the Market Matters PDF right now. Half way in.

So far, very interesting. I get the feeling that somewhere in this article will be some tidbit of info that will make a huge impression on my art career.

Already, it's made me wonder about the fact that several galleries in Italy are interested in my work. Thus far, I've haven't really considered shipping overseas (I live in Phoenix, Arizona, USA)... but I'm being jarred off-center reading this book and I'm seriously considering going for it in Italy.

I'll let you know my thoughts after reading the whole deal.

Thanks.

Hey Tammy,
Also looking forward to working with you!
Marketing certainly is an art itself. One comment from "The Dynamics of the Contemporary Art Market" - People want to buy something that expresses their personality - it speaks to you.
Chat again. D.

Hi! I'm in Alyson's class too...and I have to say that if you're only spending 50% of your time on marketing, I need to sit at your knee and find out how you manage to do it all in so little time! =]

Look forward to working with you over the coming weeks.
